On the Viewer - Fringe (Season 2, Episode 6 - "Earthling")
 by Fëanor

Another crazy and terrifying and gruesome opening. Fringe! How I love thee.

The scene with the kid mimicking Broyles in the restaurant is totally cute. Although they had me afraid for a second there that the kid was going to die horribly somehow, or turn out to be an evil mutant.

Olivia arrives at the crime scene and says, "This doesn't make any sense." So what else is new?

The man turned to ash reminds Walter of Christmas. Good old Walter! He reminisces fondly over how Peter used to draw genitalia on the reindeer decorations.

A chemical formula that the best minds weren't able to decode? I bet Walter can figure it out in a few hours.

This is definitely personal for Broyles. He never gets directly involved with a case like this.

This thing seems to like the dark, whatever it is.

Senator: "I'm not CIA."
Broyles: "There was a time when you would have said that as a matter of pride, not an excuse."

Broyles tells the Senator, "Please give my regard to Patricia." What did that mean? He said it rather pointedly. Just trying to remind the guy that they're close friends and he owes him a solid?

Walter [about the Russians]: "Just because they're from the other side of the world, Peter, is it so hard to believe that they would have their own stripe of the inconceivable? Even 40 years ago, you wouldn't believe what those pinkos were up to."

A Russian cosmonaut brought something weird back from space! It's a radiation vampire that disintegrates people! I love Fringe.

Wow. Dude talked his brother into continuing to live. That's impressive.

Broyles explains the personal connection: this is the case that killed his marriage.

So, the chemical formula just means the cosmonaut has to die? That's kind of disappointing. It doesn't really make that much sense, either. I mean, where the chemical formula come from? How is that information locked inside it?

Wow, cool reveal with the fan. Poor Timor.

Broyles takes care of business with a well-aimed gunshot. Well done, sir. That was unexpected!

It's a little weird that Broyles went to his ex's place to tell her the case was closed. Did he expect her to immediately jump in his arms?

Oh, man, I love that ending so much. Creepy CIA guy shows up to threaten Broyles, and he asks him what they did with the cosmonaut. "We had no choice... once he started breathing again." And he just looks up at the night sky. Awesome!!

Great, great stuff, my friends. Another classic episode, full of wonderfully crazy ideas, deliciously dark humor, and effective character moments.
