| Resourcefulness |
by Fëanor |
Part of our current nighttime routine is that the boy watches Scooby-Doo with us for a bit in our room before I take him off to his room, read him a few stories, and then put him in his crib to sleep. He always takes his beloved stuffed giraffe with him during this process. Tonight when I picked him up to take him to his room, he was already holding a car in one hand and a truck in the other. So he wrapped his legs around giraffe and dragged him off that way. That's my boy. |

by Fëanor |
Hey, remember that Cafepress store I used to have? Well, I still have it! My brother realized this, and sent me a T-shirt design, so I put it up! That's right, a new product! Amazing. Here it is. You could buy it, if you wanted. I'm just saying.
(Btw, one of my old T-shirt designs had to die so that this one might live. But seeing as how only one person ever bought it, and that person was my Dad, I don't think anyone will miss it.)
UPDATE: Yeah, so, never mind! Turns out CafePress did not like that design. Fair enough, I suppose. |

by Fëanor |
Since even before my son was born, I have been engaging in the time-honored tradition of Dads everywhere by telling him strange, pointless stories and awful, unfunny jokes, and giving him completely useless advice. I've decided to inflict some of this on you. Enjoy.
- "Hey, you must be Two-Foot McGee! I can tell because you have two feet!"
- When attempting to get the child to put his arm in a sleeve: "Hey buddy, who's your favorite character actor from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? That's right! Arm-in! Armin Shimerman!
- "Don't lose your Han Solo. Daddy lost his Han Solo once and he never got over it."
UPDATE:
- "Why are the people of the planet Wars so clean all the time? Because they're always Wartian!"
- "Are you a dude? Do you have dude powers? Were you bitten by a radioactive dude?

| That Game, It's Still There! |
by Fëanor |
Just so you know, that game I made, I didn't just drop it on the site and walk away from it. I've been updating it frequently over the past month, and I think it's improved quite a bit. Give it a try if you haven't yet. Or even if you have! Just play it! Don't make me beg here.
Bet you can't beat my high score... |

- Piggie!
- I'm a big fan of early filmmaker Georges Méliès, especially his celebrated Le Voyage Dans La Lune. Well, that film has been restored with a new soundtrack by French pop duo Air! Here's a clip.
- I feel like I've seen this before... but anyway, it's still cool: 48 years of Doctor Who in about 10 minutes.
- You can download a free copy of the game they played in The Last Starfighter right here! It's a PC-only exe, by the way; sorry, Mac-users. I haven't played it yet, but I will! (Via)
- Well, Liam Neeson was at least on the set of The Dark Knight Rises. And he may have a cameo reprising his role as Ra's al Ghul. Which would be AWESOME.
- You can now purchase this great Hellboy/Peanuts mashup.
- I enjoy this Adopt a Dire Wolf T-shirt. It supports a good cause!
- Via Warren Ellis, "Indonesian man arrested for kicking woman he thought was a ghost." And really, from the way he describes it, I might have kicked her, too. But more likely I probably would have just run screaming.

| The Adventures of Fat Guy & Son |
by Fëanor |
The boy didn't nap hardly at all today, despite my parents' best efforts (they look after him when I work from home), so I resolved to use the age-old tactic of desperate parents everywhere and drive him around for a while to see if that would knock him out. As I was getting us ready to head out (always a lengthy procedure), he caught sight of a bowl of Cheerios that I was keeping in the diaper bag as an emergency snack and made noises and motions to indicate that he wished to consume these immediately. Clearly dinner was going to have to happen before a nap, so I sat him down with the Os and some water while I grabbed myself a salad, baby carrots, and some veggie dip out of the fridge. We each munched on our own stuff in silence for a while until he made noises and motions to indicate he wanted some of my carrots. He has often shown interest in baby carrots for some reason, despite the fact that whenever he puts one in his mouth, he becomes visibly distressed. The same thing happened this time, but he followed up his sour expression with further motions that seemed to indicate he wanted to try what I was doing: dipping the carrots. When I asked him if he wanted some dip, he even agreed by repeating "dip" as best he could in toddler-ese. This was extremely impressive, so I had to comply. Of course, once I put a little dip on a carrot and gave it to him, he just sucked the dip off and handed me the carrot back, indicating that I was to apply more dip forthwith. Being the pushover I am, I did so. After a while this became tiresome and more than a little gross, so I did something even more gross: I scooped out a nice dollop of dip into a bowl, stuck a spoon in it, and handed it to him. After eating a good amount of this, he switched over to using the dip as paint and applied a liberal coating to his platter and water cup. He then noticed that somehow his hands had gotten disgracefully dirty and requested that I clean them immediately. It seemed time to move on at this point, so I finally got us packed up and out.
Our default destination when we take the boy for a (hopefully) sleep-inducing drive is the closest Dunkin' Donuts with a drive thru, so that's where I headed this time. He babbled and burbled his way all the way there, and things were looking grim. Worse still, as I pulled away from the Dunkin' Donuts, I realized that either his sense of smell has become excellent, or I've been to too many drive thrus with him, because he put his hand out and started grunting. I had no choice but to fill the hand with one of the munchkins I'd purchased. A little ways on, the whining began again, and I saw the hand sticking out again in my rear view mirror. Once again I filled the hand.
Thankfully this wasn't repeated. The boy continued burbling for a while, but as I neared home, the backseat, now dark with evening, became suddenly quiet. Hoping against hope, I circled the block a few more times, then carefully pulled into the driveway. When I opened the backdoor, I found him fast asleep and slumped completely sideways, a small chunk of munchkin clutched in his hand, crumbs of munchkin down his coat, and his socks inexplicably torn off and thrown onto the seat beside him.
Young man, I salute you. |

| Want to Play a Game? |
by Fëanor |
Hey, folks! I've been designing a video game for what seems like years now, and even though it's not quite done and I'm still tweaking things, I'm tired of keeping it under wraps and have decided to release it into the wild! I'm currently calling it Japhex (although that's subject to change - I haven't decided yet if I like that name), and it's a classic, arcade-style space shoot 'em up, in the Galaga/Gradius mode. If you would do me a favor and try it out, I would greatly appreciate it! And if you have any comments, questions, or issues, I would love to hear them - and please be as honest and detailed as you can! Basically I'm turning you all into my play-testers, so if you find a bug or if there's anything you don't like, I definitely want to know.
It's not particularly pretty, as I concentrated more on functionality than looks, and I think the difficulty level definitely needs adjusting. But I'll stop making excuses now.
Oh, and there's an Easter Egg or two, so feel free to poke around! |

- Aww, happy holidays from the Broship of the Ring!
- You should check out Draw a Stupid Animal. And maybe contribute, if that's your thing.
- Here's a fun holiday news story for you.
- Heh. Yeah.
- This is amusing.
- Inflatable tentacle arm! Nice.
- That Buffy movie they were going to make without Joss Whedon is probably not going to happen. Which is probably good news.
- In case you have somehow not seen them yet, here are the trailers for Prometheus and The Hobbit. It's now extremely clear that Prometheus is indeed an Alien prequel. The logo even slowly builds up line by line, just like in Alien! And yeah, I'm still not sure about how the dwarfs look in The Hobbit, but that trailer is pretty great. When they start singing the song at the end? Chills!
- Dude, a LEGO Zelda would be amazing.
- How about some Princess Leia hair bun headphone covers? I'd wear those.
- The cover for Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Century: 2009, the final installment of the "Century" trilogy. It's coming in June, 2012. I only read the first entry in this trilogy, and wasn't that impressed, but I still have a fondness for the series as a whole. And anyway, it's a great cover. (Via)
- Some news on the cast of the upcoming Ender's Game movie, the biggest item being that Colonel Hyram Graff will be played by Harrison Ford. (Via)
- New evidence suggests that children start forming solid memories as early as two years of age. So we only have a few months before we have to really start worrying about scarring our son for life? Good to know.
