On the Viewer - Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Season 2, Episode 15 - "Desert Cantos")
 by Fëanor

This episode is broken up into titled sections. The first section is called "Vigil," in reference to the vigil that's being held for the workers who supposedly died in the mysterious explosion at the warehouse in the desert (although of course we know they were all actually killed by Catherine).

What's with the dead cows by the side of the road? Cattle mutilation, maybe? I mean, since we're bringing UFOs into it and all, might as well bring in the cattle mutilation, too...

Oh, man, they're actually going to press people at the vigil for information?? That's cold.

Also, should Sarah really be hanging around here? Aren't the cops still looking for her? Sure, all the evidence was burned and the officer in charge died, but the other officer is still around and might very well recognize her from a photograph he saw in her file.

Man, this is awkward. John's picking up girls at funerals now. Nice, John. Very nice. Of course, Sarah's even better; she gets into a conversation with the wife of the man she killed.

The next part: "Service." Looks like we're going to see the funeral proper now. It's interesting that they're taking us through all this. Another series would have just shown us the slaughter and then moved on. But Terminator is introducing us to the people left behind, showing us the services for those who were lost. It's pretty deep.

It's the anniversary of Catherine's husband's death. "Beautiful day, isn't it?" she says. Heh.

This woman lets some strange lady she just met open a mysterious storage locker that her husband had the key to? She's... trusting.

Next section: "Processional." Derek totally freaks out the investigator dude. Sarah's hitching a ride with the wife of the man she killed, and actually ends up listening to a recording of the killing with her!! Argh. Meanwhile, John and Cameron somehow ended up hitching a ride with Zoe, the girl John cozied up with at the vigil. Very strange. Would people really do this?

Hmm... it's looking like maybe the guy Sarah killed also killed Zoe's ex-boyfriend and his parents??

Cameron, to Henry: "Zoe's not in love with you." Inappropriate!!

Ah, good, we're getting back to the dead cows.

Now it's time for "Burial." Oh. Looks like Zoe ended up at the funeral after all.

Hmm. John picked up on a weird inconsistency in what Zoe was telling him about her dead father. She said she'd chosen a gray suit to bury him in, but now she says he's a pile of ashes somewhere.

Catherine's not doing so good at this pretending to be human thing. Grief and compassion are not things she understands well.

(Huh. I've never seen this before. The version of this episode playing on Fox.com is screwed up. There's a big blank space between 28:48 and 35:06. Luckily, Hulu also has it, and that version is not screwed up. Whew. God bless Hulu!)

Next section is "Wake." Ah ha! Zoe's Dad is not dead, and that's who the investigator is looking for! Interesting. And hey, woah! Secret passage! Pretty poorly hidden, too. Dude had a freaking Batcave! This is intense; a spy camera terminal, a huge underground passage...

Next section: "Recessional." Oh, jeez. Zoe's Dad was involved in her ex-boyfriend's murder.

Man, Sarah just left Ed's wife out to dry. Poor lady.

Oh no, Catherine's trying to bond with her daughter again! Always creepy. She's just repeating the stuff Ellison said to her, in the hopes it will work on her daughter. So disturbing. "Your lap is cold." "I know." Ugh!

Holy crap! There's Sarah's spaceship. Dude's just got it in the back of a truck? WTF?

A fascinating episode, in which certain things were resolved, but many questions were left unanswered. It's interesting that it was structured around the funeral, and that we took a hard look at the people who had died and their families, and all the secrets in their lives. As always, I look forward to seeing what happens next.
