The Haul
 by Fëanor

Disclaimer: Gift-givers, if I failed to list something you gave me, I apologize; it's not because your gift was inferior, but merely because my memory is inferior, and because I didn't happen to find your item amongst the various gift piles that I searched during the sweep of the house that I undertook while researching this post.

From the folks:
  • Baltimore or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire - From my wishlist, an illustrated horror/sci-fi novel by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Poppy has a lot of time off and has actually already read this!

  • Super Mario Galaxy - From my wishlist. I was hoping I'd be receiving this extremely well-reviewed Wii game for Christmas. Poppy demanded that I play it last night while she watched, and I have to say, it is a ton of fun and extremely addictive. Hours went by before I finally realized I had to put it down and go to bed.

  • Hershey's special holiday design milk chocolate bar - Mmm... chocolate.

  • Iron Maiden's Powerslave & Enslaved's Ruun (CDs) - Metal for Christmas! Both of these, IIRC, were on a list I found on the internet of great overlooked metal or something like that, a list which I took to heart and transferred whole onto my wishlist. Hopefully the internet was right...

  • Super Heavyweights die-cast collectible figurine of Futurama's Bender - One of my favorite characters from one of my favorite TV shows, in metal statuette form! He will stand proudly on my desk at work next to the Nosferatu, Autobot Jazz, a couple of race cars, and various Gundam.

From my grandparents:
  • Applebee's gift card - I'm sure this will come in handy. Food is happiness!

From my father-in-law:
  • Mr. Beer - This is a home beer-making kit that's supposed to take the science out of beer. So I expect at some point in the future one or more of the people reading this will be forced to try a beer made by me. You have been warned.

  • Blade Runner: The Director's Cut on DVD - I can't believe I didn't already have this!

  • Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training - From my wishlist. The Wii Zapper itself is essentially just a piece of plastic molded in such a way that you can use it to hold your Wii Remote and Nunchuck as if they're a rifle. Which is kind of corny. And getting the Remote and Nunchuck in there properly is a bit of an ordeal. But its quite a cool little contraption once you've got it together, and the game (which I popped in and gave a whirl almost as soon as I got it) is surprisingly fun.

  • Starbucks gift card - Yeah, I've already been using this.

From the family pollyanna:
  • Hayao Miyazaki's manga of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, volumes 1 and 2 - My understanding is that Miyazaki had an idea for an animated film, but at the time in Japan you didn't make an animated film unless it was an adaptation of an already existing manga. So Miyazaki wrote the manga so he could make the movie. I love Miyazaki, and I love this movie, so I thought I'd give the manga a try. Of course, it's huge and long, but these first two volumes are a good start.

From poppy:
  • ZombieWorld Volume 1: Champion of the Worms - A graphic novel written by Mike Mignola that I'd never heard of; good find, poppy!

  • Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser - A graphic novel adaptation of stories by Fritz Leiber with art by Mignola. Another great find.

  • Midnite Movies Double Feature DVD including Yongary and Konga - I'd been wanting a copy of Konga on DVD for a long time, and I got lucky here, as poppy was unable to find it without another movie thrown in. Yongary appears to be a Korean Godzilla. Konga is a completely awful King Kong rip-off that I dearly love starring Michael Gough as a skeevy mad scientist whose plan to make his chimp into a giant ape slave who kills people for him goes horribly awry - like it does.

  • Mouse Guard Volume 1: Fall 1152 - Again, poppy managed to surprise me with a graphic novel I didn't already own and knew little about. This one is well reviewed and looks quite neat - sort of a medieval fantasy where all the characters are mice - so I'm looking forward to it.

  • Harcover collection of The Hobbit and The History of the Hobbit - A nice, fresh, new hardcover copy of Tolkien's The Hobbit (one of my favorite books of all time, of course) accompanied by two volumes of the book's history, which contain earlier versions of the text and bits of Tolkien's notes. Very, very cool.
