Points on a Plane, Volume Two
 by Fëanor

  • This time, I agree with the folks at The Movie Blog: this 1000 Words thing is a really cool idea for a movie. Here's the concept: dude can only speak 1000 more words, and then he dies. Wow. That could go pretty much anywhere. This has only just been picked up by Dreamworks, so it's hardly off the ground yet, but I'll keep an ear open for more on it.

  • Another great idea for a movie: American Zombie, about the daily lives of a community of the "living deceased" in LA. Remember, as movie night taught us, zombie love is gross, but not to zombies.

  • I just read this review of Unknown White Male, and now I really want to see it. It's a documentary (although it sounds like the premise for a Hollywood film) about a real person who one day found himself on a train with no memory of how he'd got there, where he was going, or who he was. Although he could remember how to perform mechanical actions, like signing his name, he otherwise had complete amnesia - his previous life was gone. The movie is the uplifting story of how he figured out who he'd been, and then made a new life for himself. Sounds intense and fascinating.

  • I spent a good portion of this weekend reliving my childhood and early adolescence by playing old Nintendo games. And no, I'm not talking about an emulator or anything - I was playing the original cartridges on the original NES. Frankly, I can't believe the thing works at all after the amount of use and abuse my brother and I gave it, but after a quick cleaning of the contacts, every game I stick in launches beautifully. I got farther in Gradius than I can ever remember getting (although I did eventually have to make heavy use of The Konami Code); clobbered Contra in about twenty minutes (again with The Code, but I don't think I really needed it; it was more about the confidence it gave me); got my ass handed to me by the Czechs in Ice Hockey; and made it about halfway through RC Pro AM. Of course, poppy and I also played a goodly amount of the real classics: Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. I'd forgotten just how long and difficult SMB3 is, and without a save feature of any kind! You've just got to sit down and devote hours of concentrated play to that one. Which I did, and still couldn't beat it. Sigh.

Anyway, all of this is just a lead-in to this link about a new game somebody made based on the SMB3 engine. It's got new power-ups, all new levels, and sounds really cool. It's called simply Mario Adventure, and here it is as a zip file. Unfortunately, it's not a cartridge, so you'll also need an emulator to play; I'm sure you can track down one of those if you haven't got one already. Woo hoo! Mario! (Via Joystiq)

  • Somebody told me that LEGO Star Wars is actually a really fun game, and LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is sounding even cooler and...funner. I might have to check these out...

  • Another fun DIY project via Digg: make your own 35mm camera out of paper.
