Roll On Up
 by Fëanor

Given that Yagathai, Peccable, Super Tarzan, TrackerNeil, and I (and Sarcasmo, in spirit) were rolling up characters for our 2nd Edition AD&D, Forgotten Realms campaign last night, I found today's Penny Arcade particularly (almost weirdly) appropriate and humorous.

It was my first step into a larger world, you might say. I've never rolled up a character before. It was quite an experience, far more complex and time-consuming than I'd considered. One must do a lot of digging through various books, checking various tables, copying down various numbers. One must make various difficult decisions and come up with a creative name and backstory for one's character (I'm a half-elf named Erik Arlen, but I prefer to go by my elven name, Sorel, because I resent my human father and my human heritage and miss my elven mother, who died when I was young). I found equipping my character particularly difficult and time-consuming. I mean, you even have to get the guy shoes, or he won't have any shoes!! Well, I got riding boots. And a dog. And a couple of swords, and a lot of arrows, and some rope, and...

Well, I could go on, but I'll spare you the details. Now I have to copy all this stuff onto a character sheet. And I think I still didn't get everything I need from the books and will have to check them again.

But this is not to say that I'm displeased or disillusioned. In fact, I'm even more excited than I was, if that's possible. Yagathai made us use a rather nasty, though clever, communal rolling up process wherein we all rolled all our stats, and then voted to decide whether we would keep what we had, or if we would ALL reroll EVERYTHING. Ouch. Luckily, the group was generally in agreement over when to reroll and when not to, and we all met the base requirements for the character classes we wanted. I was the one causing most of the trouble because I wanted to be a ranger/cleric and you need really high stats to be a ranger.

But like I said, we all made it! Well, Sarcasmo ended up with maybe not the strongest fighter ever, but she's pretty well-balanced, and I think we'll do well. None of us are too charismatic, so we won't have many henchmen, and they'll all hate us, but wtf, right?

Anyways, I'd better get back to work.

Did I mention that I have weapon proficiencies in the short sword, long sword, long bow, and quarterstaff? And then I have a +1 damage adjustment bonus? Hee hee, *snort*.
