Swipes and Swaths
 by Fëanor

  • Cinematical asks is Netflix destroying the brick-and-mortar video rental industry, and furthermore, is that a good thing? I say, yes and yes! I guess sometimes there's something vaguely enjoyable about wandering around a real room and looking at the actual physical movies that they have available, but I remember it generally being a rather frustrating experience during which everyone sort of shuffled confusedly about like zombies and nobody ended up finding what they really wanted anyway. I say, good riddance. Down with Blockbuster! Long live Netflix!

  • Pixar and Disney could be getting back together. I kind of liked the idea that the spunky kid Pixar could just kick the old mouse Disney to the curb and go it on their own successfully. But then again, it would be nice for Pixar to be able to keep the monstrous marketing machinery of Disney behind them. So I guess this is ultimately a good thing for everyone concerned.

  • Joystiq is constantly digging up these ridiculously useless and unattainable items that I deeply and feverishly covet. Case in point, the Pac-Man dinner table. It's not for sale, but you can probably make one yourself...if you've got a lot of money, time, and talent. Sigh.

  • Wired News's list of free, non-porn (aaww) iPod content is pretty okay - even if you don't have an iPod. I'm still not into the whole podcast thing - I don't really get what the big deal is - and the list is pretty heavy on stuff of that sort, but I do like me some free music, and Wired does mention some spots to acquire that, some of which I already knew about (3hive, Salon's Audiofile), but others which I didn't (Google Music). I'd add to their list the Regnyouth archives, a music blog that Vis Major made me aware of recently. Downloading stuff off of there is quite a procedure (click a pop-up link; wait twenty seconds - and then wait another twenty after refreshing if your security settings stop downloads - to get a RAR file; if you don't have WinRAR, go download that and install it; then extract the file only to discover that it's only a text file with a URL in it; visit that URL and then wait anywhere from a few seconds to almost an hour to download another compressed file which finally contains your music), but they get a lot of interesting stuff, and after all it is FREE, so what do you want? Anyway, my iPod is filling up, and I am pleased.

  • After watching the trailer and seeing some ads, I was pretty much convinced that there was no need for me to see Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, but my Canadian friend Talentless Clod (who is a member of the fantastic band The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, and is actually not at all talentless or cloddish) has pretty much changed my mind. He says it's a funny, clever homage to the noir genre, and is one of the best films he's seen this year. Tasty.
