• When I heard they were re-releasing the universally reviled Phantom Menace in theaters in 3D, I was really curious what kind of audience it would have. I mean, everybody says they hate this movie! Why would anyone pay extra to see it again in one more dimension than before? Then again, it's Star Wars. Star Wars has a certain cache. And nerds are famous for paying for things so they can then complain about them endlessly. Plus, there's the kid factor. Kids don't know they're supposed to hate The Phantom Menace. Well, looks like the nerd and kid factors won out, because the 3D version made $73.4 million in less than two weeks and pushed the movie's overall box office total over the billion dollar mark to make it the 11th highest grossing film of all time. Wow.


• Speaking of Star Wars, here are some rejected Star Wars products. Also, in the upcoming Star Wars game for Kinect, there will be a Slave Leia dance-off.

Poppy and I watched the original How to Train Your Dragon a little while ago, and although it was very predictable, it was also entertaining and surprisingly moving.


• Heh. This Wicked Witch of the East doorstop is pretty clever.


• Watch a creepy trailer for a movie called Frankenstein's Army, which is set near the end of WWII, and features Hitler using Victor Frankenstein's notes to replenish his dwindling troops in just the way you might expect.


• Speaking of trailers, Cinematical has the trailers for Thor and Captain America running back to back here. The Cap trailer is looking good! I'm excited.

• I've been reading a collection of old Russian folk tales, so it was interesting to find this post about an upcoming novel that re-envisions the stories of old Russian folk figures. You can read an excerpt here. It takes the elements of Russian folk tales - the repetitions (often in threes), the moments of sudden and inexplicable magic - and analyzes and re-imagines them in the context of communism and socialism. It's absolutely fantastic.


• Now that a mad scientist is cloning a woolly mammoth, io9 has suggestions for some other extinct animals we might want to bring back.


• Fringe fans just have to love this "Walter is my homeboy" T-shirt. Because you know what? Walter is my homeboy.


• Good news, everyone! NBC has ordered a pilot for Ron Moore's police show set in a world ruled by magic - Precinct 17.


• Sounds like Marvel is once again making an attempt to turn Black Panther into a movie.


• The bikini- and carnage-filled trailer for the DVD/blu-ray release of the modern classic, Sharktopus, complete with catchy beach rock theme song.


• As the entire world knows by now, Anne Hathaway will be Catwoman and Tom Hardy will be Bane in the next Batman movie. It took me a while to mull this news over. I haven't seen Anne Hathaway in much. She seems a bit goody-goody to play Catwoman, but hey, she's an actress! She should be able to pretend to not be goody-goody, the way actresses do. Tom Hardy seems a bit of an odd choice, too, for a monstrous, wrestler-type villain, but Tom Hardy is awesome, and also pretty damn ripped, so I think he can pull it off. Plus, Christopher Nolan's instincts are pretty damn good as far as these things are concerned (anybody remember Heath Ledger, the best Joker ever?), so I'm cautiously optimistic.


• The 1600th episode of Laugh-Out-Loud Cats is pretty mind-blowing, you guys.


• Dark Horse/Mike Mignola need to hire Enrique Alcatena to draw a Hellboy book RIGHT NOW. I'm just saying. This guy is GOOD.


• Someone has invented a game that's a combination of bowling and billiards. That's actually kind of vaguely brilliant.


• Here's a video of someone throwing boiling water into the air somewhere where it's so cold that the water instantly evaporates (or turns to snow, or something - I don't know, I was an English major, not a science... guy).


• You can simulate a fake incoming call with Samsung phones? Hey, I have a Samsung phone!


• A guy attached a tiny video camera to some arrows and shot them with his bow! Nice!

• Rage Against the Machine might record a new album as early as this year. Huzzah!


• Supposed details on the fifth Indiana Jones film: it will star Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf, it will be about the Bermuda Triangle, and it will be "an emotional and exciting conclusion to the franchise."


• Nicktoons will air 26 half-hour episodes of a new animated series called Voltron Force starting next year. Supposedly the show will remain faithful to the original, and Mattel will produce a new toy line to go along with it. Sounds like they're sticking with the lion Voltron rather than the vehicle Voltron.

• Marvel's got a miniseries coming called The Death of Dracula. Here are some preview pages. Supposedly Dracula's death is going to have huge consequences for the Marvel Universe as a whole. I'm vaguely curious, but I'm not familiar with the writer or the artist, and these preview pages aren't all that exciting. Plus, didn't Paul Cornell already kill Dracula in Captain Britain and MI13? • In a recent interview, Christopher Nolan said there will be no Joker, Mr. Freeze, or Penguin in Batman 3. He also says it will be the end of a story. And he seems set on his (rather disappointing) idea of keeping Batman and Superman separate.


• Some dude remade Zelda II as a 3D FPS you can play in your browser. I always thought this game was the least interesting and most frustratingly difficult of the Zelda games, and Joystiq says this new version is even more difficult than the original, so I think I'll skip it. Still, cool idea.

• Check out the trailer for The Witches of Oz, a sort of sequel to The Wizard of Oz in which an adult Dorothy discovers the popular books were based on her own true adventures as a child and that Oz is now invading our own world. The movie looks a bit cheesy, but the cast includes Christopher Lloyd, Sean Astin, Lance Henriksen, Billy Boyd, and Jeffrey Combs. It's not the only Oz movie on the way, either; Sam Mendes will direct a prequel to The Wizard of Oz entitled Oz the Great and Powerful, and Robert Downey Jr. might play the Wizard.


• A rather amusing, slightly spoilery Serenity web comic. It helps that it references a classic Warner Bros. cartoon.


• Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of Lars von Trier's upcoming sci-fi disaster movie, Melancholia. I hope she knows what she's getting into!
