• I've got a bunch of Song of Ice and Fire links for you today! First up is a list of ten characters io9 suspects they will leave out of season 2 of Game of Thrones. I'd be happy if they left out the rather horrendous story of poor Lollys, but I'd be really sad to lose Vargo Hoat, Aeron Greyjoy, and Craster. Next is a huge, amazing map of Westeros (via). Then we've got 11 versions of the excellent theme song from Game of Thrones. Finally, a few photos of the actress who will play Brienne in the series. She seems a little too pretty for the role, but George R.R. Martin says she looked the part when she came in to audition, so...


• If you haven't already seen it, here's our first look at Dori, Nori, and Ori from The Hobbit.

• Mr. Dan Hipp celebrates the Green Lantern, and other green heroes and villains from throughout pop culture history. Speaking of Green Lantern, here's the Onion A.V. Club review of the new animated movie, and Ebert's review of the new live-action movie. Sounds like neither movie is all that great, but I still might have to watch them eventually, just because.

• Quentin Tarantino's western, Django Unchained, has a release date! It's December 25, 2012. Merry Christmas!


• The Academy is changing the Best Picture nomination process yet again so that there can now be anywhere from 5 to 10 nominees each year, depending on how many movies receive first place votes on 5 percent of total ballots cast. Wha? Why don't we just go back to 5, guys? That was working fine for a long time.


• Check out Sam Bosma's site - he's been doing sketches of characters from the Song of Ice and Fire books lately.


• This ad for the new Legend of Zelda game featuring Robin Williams and his daughter Zelda (who apparently was actually named after the princess) is pretty darn cute.


• A Pontiac built with an entirely transparent, Plexiglass exterior for the 1939 New York World's Fair is going up for auction and has been appraised at a price between $275,000 and $475,000. Click through for some awesome pictures.


• I'm mostly over impressive replicas of things in cake form, but this Millennium Falcon cake has working lights!!


• The Wolverine has a new director and it is James "Not Darren Aronofsky" Mangold. Hmm. I've seen a handful of Mangold's films. Of those, Cop Land was the only really good one. Identity and 3:10 to Yuma were both well done but had disappointing endings. So I guess we'll see!


• Watch the red band trailer for Attack the Block, which is a sci-fi/action/comedy featuring Nick Frost and South London hoodlums versus aliens. Fun! (Via Blastr, a site that cleverly got the movie's title wrong in its headline. Sigh.)


• The most bad-ass way to chop lettuce ever.

Possibly it's just referring to an encyclopedia, which isn't all that exciting. But still... squee? Anyway, while we're talking Harry Potter, check out the latest trailer for the last movie. It is mighty exciting, and the emotional opening nearly made me break down at my desk here.

• Hee hee. More amusing (and not-so-safe-for-work) sketches from the mighty Kate Beaton.


• Did you see that Comic Twart is doing Princess Bride? Anybody want a peanut?


• Ooh, they've cast Bard and Smaug in The Hobbit! Benedict Cumberbatch, who made a very fine Sherlock Holmes in the recent BBC TV series, will play the part of the dragon. I'm not familiar with the dude playing Bard (Luke Evans), but he certainly looks the part.

• I'm kind of in love with Dan Hipp, you guys.


• In a recent comic book, Superman renounced his American citizenship, declaring himself a citizen of the world. Which makes sense to me, given how he's always facing off against potentially world-shattering threats and doesn't limit his patrols to one country. It didn't seem like that big a deal to me, actually - it's really more of a stunt that probably won't change much - but for whatever reason, the news blew up into the mainstream media and upset a lot of people (most of them conservative idiots, apparently). More importantly, it led to the creation of an inspired hashtag on Twitter.


• This has to be one of the best YouTube videos ever: every one of Hudson's lines from Aliens. (You should already know this, but the audio is NSFW.)


• I'm pretty sure I linked to this site before, ages ago, but it's worth another link: Hobbitish, featuring Hobbit-related art from around the world. (Via)


• The next James Bond film is getting about one-third of its funding from product placement: a whopping, record-breaking $45 million. I'm looking forward to the scene where Bond has a refreshing Mountain Dew instead of his signature martini.

I mean, just look at the last Terminator movie. Or, on second thought, don't look at it. It's terrible!

• A dude who writes Syfy original movies developed a new way to make ice cream.


• The first official, HD trailer for Tarsem Singh's Greek mythology epic, Immortals. Oh my God, it looks so good. I love Singh's other films, and was really looking forward to seeing what he could do with this material and a big budget. Looks like he knocked it out of the park. These are the thrilling, wildly imaginative visuals I've come to expect from this filmmaker. I can't wait to see the complete, final product.


• This io9 article led me to these two interesting pieces: Michael Chabon's appreciation of a wonderful little book I haven't read in ages, The Phantom Toolbooth; and an analysis of why Julie Taymor's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark failed.


• A couple of dudes were watching Game of Thrones, got into an argument over which of the characters was going to "win" (by which I guess they meant, take the throne and defeat all other challengers?), and it turned into a physical fight that ended with the police arresting one of them. Heh. That's silly, because clearly Jon and Dany are going to win, and I'll throw you through a window if you say anything different.


• The Beastie Boys are streaming their new album right here. You have to go and listen to it right now because it is fantastic.

I can't say this makes me feel particularly optimistic about this movie. You're trying to fix it by piling more effects on top? Yeah, that always works.

• Replacing the dialog in various scenes from Star Wars with depressing, existential French philosophy is surprisingly hilarious.

• I love that we're bringing back the old William Castle theatrics and actually installing movie theater seats that shake you around for Super 8. But still.

Poppy and I watched the original How to Train Your Dragon a little while ago, and although it was very predictable, it was also entertaining and surprisingly moving.


• Heh. This Wicked Witch of the East doorstop is pretty clever.


• Watch a creepy trailer for a movie called Frankenstein's Army, which is set near the end of WWII, and features Hitler using Victor Frankenstein's notes to replenish his dwindling troops in just the way you might expect.


• Speaking of trailers, Cinematical has the trailers for Thor and Captain America running back to back here. The Cap trailer is looking good! I'm excited.

This stuff is actually pretty "old" now, in internet time, but I already had this much of the post written, so I figured I might as well publish it.

• A trailer for a new take on the Red Riding Hood story starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman. Looks like it could be fun, despite the Twilight association.


• At long last, a full-length trailer for Green Lantern is here! And it looks... cheesy, actually. Very cheesy. Sigh.


• Another trailer! This one is for a medieval fantasy/buddy movie/action movie/stoner comedy called Your Highness. It actually looks kind of funny.


• You know what I like? Trailers! Here's yet another one, this time for a period action piece starring Donnie Yen. It appears to be a sequel to some previous film. Yen plays a sort of superhero named Chen Zhen, who looks rather like Kato. Could be fun.


• This animated short from Taiwan is absolutely beautiful and amazing. Definitely in the Studio Ghibli tradition.


• Another trailer! Can you believe it? This one is for Cowboys and Aliens, and is awesome.

• Marvel's got a miniseries coming called The Death of Dracula. Here are some preview pages. Supposedly Dracula's death is going to have huge consequences for the Marvel Universe as a whole. I'm vaguely curious, but I'm not familiar with the writer or the artist, and these preview pages aren't all that exciting. Plus, didn't Paul Cornell already kill Dracula in Captain Britain and MI13? Or am I remembering that wrong? (Via)

• In a recent interview, Christopher Nolan said there will be no Joker, Mr. Freeze, or Penguin in Batman 3. He also says it will be the end of a story. And he seems set on his (rather disappointing) idea of keeping Batman and Superman separate.


• Some dude remade Zelda II as a 3D FPS you can play in your browser. I always thought this game was the least interesting and most frustratingly difficult of the Zelda games, and Joystiq says this new version is even more difficult than the original, so I think I'll skip it. Still, cool idea.

• A readaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is on the way, this time directed by Let The Right One In director Tomas Alfredson and starring Garry Oldman as George Smiley. Neat!

• In the movie Captain America will have two costumes: his public-appearance, USO suit, and his practical fighting suit. The former will be similar to the costume we're used to seeing on him; the latter will be quite different. You can find a description here. Another Marvel-related tidbit: Josh "Sawyer" Holloway of Lost fame might have a lead role in an upcoming Marvel film.


• Probably you've already seen the terrifying, mind-blowing photos of the gigantic sinkhole in Guatemala, which seems to look down into the very core of the Earth, but just in case you haven't...


• A couple of fun Ren and Stimpy illustrations.


• A new plot summary for the Green Lantern film refers to only one villain, and it's neither of the guys that have been mentioned so far. In fact, it's Parallax. Hopefully this is not really the official plot synopsis, because it would mean they're trying to cover too many characters and too much story in one movie. Plus, I'm just not a huge fan of Parallax.


• These Mario Kart RC toys sound amazing. They can actually pick up power-ups and use them on each other!


• Speaking of Mario, check out this amazing gameplay trailer for the fan-made game Super Mario Bros. X.
