• Cinematical has some quick news bites: Nathan Fillion will voice Hal Jordan in the animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Also, there's going to be a How to Train Your Dragon 2 about Hiccup becoming the leader of his Viking clan. Poppy and I watched the original How to Train Your Dragon a little while ago, and although it was very predictable, it was also entertaining and surprisingly moving.


• Heh. This Wicked Witch of the East doorstop is pretty clever.


• Watch a creepy trailer for a movie called Frankenstein's Army, which is set near the end of WWII, and features Hitler using Victor Frankenstein's notes to replenish his dwindling troops in just the way you might expect.


• Speaking of trailers, Cinematical has the trailers for Thor and Captain America running back to back here. The Cap trailer is looking good! I'm excited.


• The other day I posted an unofficial, bootleg sort of video of Galactus in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so I thought I should follow up with the official video, which is no less terrifying. (Via)

• I've been reading a collection of old Russian folk tales, so it was interesting to find this post about an upcoming novel that re-envisions the stories of old Russian folk figures. You can read an excerpt here. It takes the elements of Russian folk tales - the repetitions (often in threes), the moments of sudden and inexplicable magic - and analyzes and re-imagines them in the context of communism and socialism. It's absolutely fantastic.


• Now that a mad scientist is cloning a woolly mammoth, io9 has suggestions for some other extinct animals we might want to bring back.


• Fringe fans just have to love this "Walter is my homeboy" T-shirt. Because you know what? Walter is my homeboy.


• Good news, everyone! NBC has ordered a pilot for Ron Moore's police show set in a world ruled by magic - Precinct 17.


• Sounds like Marvel is once again making an attempt to turn Black Panther into a movie.


• The bikini- and carnage-filled trailer for the DVD/blu-ray release of the modern classic, Sharktopus, complete with catchy beach rock theme song.


• As the entire world knows by now, Anne Hathaway will be Catwoman and Tom Hardy will be Bane in the next Batman movie. It took me a while to mull this news over. I haven't seen Anne Hathaway in much. She seems a bit goody-goody to play Catwoman, but hey, she's an actress! She should be able to pretend to not be goody-goody, the way actresses do. Tom Hardy seems a bit of an odd choice, too, for a monstrous, wrestler-type villain, but Tom Hardy is awesome, and also pretty damn ripped, so I think he can pull it off. Plus, Christopher Nolan's instincts are pretty damn good as far as these things are concerned (anybody remember Heath Ledger, the best Joker ever?), so I'm cautiously optimistic.


• The 1600th episode of Laugh-Out-Loud Cats is pretty mind-blowing, you guys.


• Dark Horse/Mike Mignola need to hire Enrique Alcatena to draw a Hellboy book RIGHT NOW. I'm just saying. This guy is GOOD.


• Someone has invented a game that's a combination of bowling and billiards. That's actually kind of vaguely brilliant.


• Here's a video of someone throwing boiling water into the air somewhere where it's so cold that the water instantly evaporates (or turns to snow, or something - I don't know, I was an English major, not a science... guy).


• You can simulate a fake incoming call with Samsung phones? Hey, I have a Samsung phone!


• A guy attached a tiny video camera to some arrows and shot them with his bow! Nice!


• More and better images from the X-Men: First Class movie.


• Blastr has compiled an impressive list of 83 differences between Fringe's alternate universe and ours.


• Muppets inserted into 2001: A Space Odyssey.


• Cinematical gives us a rundown of at least 13 movies that you can expect to see ads for during the Super Bowl.


• It sounds like Johnny Depp may be taking Robert Downey Jr.'s place in Sam Raimi's Wizard of Oz movie.


• Even for a non-American Idol fan like myself, this recap of the latest American Idol is truly entertaining. I love the quick, spot-on critique of those horrible Bing ads, too.


• Btw, don't worry, George Lucas wasn't really serious about that thing about the world ending in 2012. He claims. He probably just wants to make sure no one goes looking for his secret escape spaceship.

• M.C. Escher tennis match.


• Super Punch features some cool cakes, including an impressive Ark of the Covenant cake, plus my favorite Old Spice commercial.


• Some fantastic pieces from a Jim Steranko tribute show. That link again comes from Super Punch, which also has some highlights from a Monsters vs. Robots art show.


• A couple of upcoming movies are based on the idea that the Apollo space program didn't actually end with Apollo 17, but continued with a covert mission called Apollo 18. Sounds like a fun premise.

UPDATE:

• A bunch of new clips from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, including some really big scenes that I'm surprised they're willing to show us.


• A cool redesign of Donkey Kong. Speaking of which, Nintendo just trademarked the phrase, "It's on like Donkey Kong," supposedly in honor of a new Donkey Kong game that's coming to Wii later this month.

• The Wachowskis' sci-fi film about the Iraq War, Cobalt Neutral 9, sounds totally insane.


• A TV series spin-off of Goodfellas could be on the way, with the original screenwriter on board to write the pilot. (Via)


• I love the Hellboy/Peanuts mashup.


• This list of the 15 best miniature golf courses includes video of a couple of particularly insane holes.


• Two "micro-episodes" (WTF are those??) of the upcoming animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Things to like about the Iron Man episode: it features a giant tentacled HYDRA robot! Also Tony has a great big Jackson Pollock which moves aside to reveal a great big TV screen. And I like how Tony's Iron Man undershirt looks like it's straight out of Tron. As for the Hulk short, I enjoy that the diner is called Vital Sign. The way they animate Bruce's transformation is cool, too.


• Heh. These superhero/villain hoodies are pretty clever.


• Check out a bunch of trailers for a Bollywood movie called Robot. It looks insane!


• A trailer for the All-Star Superman animated movie. Hard to tell from this if they'll be able to capture what makes the source material so transcendent and revelatory, but we'll see.


• Some art created for George R.R. Martin's short story "And Seven Times Never Kill Man" (which is an okay story; very eerie) is oddly similar to an early concept sketch of Wookiees by Ralph McQuarrie. Did GRRM influence Star Wars?!


• An alternate opening of Iron Man 2. I haven't seen the actual opening of Iron Man 2 yet, but I rather enjoy this version.


• Cool painting.


• Underwire has a preview of Zack Whedon's Terminator 1984, a Dark Horse comic I've been looking forward to.


• How Empire Strikes Back should have ended. Heh.


• Guillermo del Toro wrote a role for Ron Perlman into his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness. Perlman, if he accepts the part (and he'd better!!), would play the guy in the expedition that cares for the dogs and the sleds. Del Toro describes him this way: "He's sort of a pragmatic guy, doesn't care about science or the mythology or the cosmology. He just is a hard-boiled Nordic man." Fun!


• Supposedly this is Christopher Nolan's short list for directors of the next Superman movie. Of these guys, my vote is for Duncan Jones.


• Another set pic from Captain America features a bad-ass lady shooting at some gangsters. Could it be Peggy Carter, Cap's girlfriend?


• The first official photo from Scream 4. It features the star and the killer, and yet still manages to be kind of boring. Ah, well.


• Star Wars/Pulp Fiction mashups.


• If Link had an iPhone, it would be a lot easier to navigate Hyrule.


• Mike Ditka as a bear.


• Pac-Man Battle Royale is a new multi-player version of the game where the Pac-Men can eat each other. Good lord!


• A Michael Jackson-themed massively multiplayer game? That's terrifying.

• M. Night Shyamalan's concept for Unbreakable 2 will become one of the "Night Chronicles" movies. This could be good news: a sequel to one of Shyamalan's only two good movies, which will be written and directed by someone other than him!


• A photo of a bullet slicing through a water drop. Impressive.


• Blastr lists some exciting upcoming superhero films. I didn't know they were even still making Ant-Man, and I'd forgotten that Edgar "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" Wright was directing. I'd see that! Actually, to be honest, I want to see every movie on this list, except the ones involving Mark Millar.
