This web application I have to use at work logs me out if I don't use it for a while, but to make things more fun, it does it kind of subtly, in the background. So I'll try to go and use it thinking I'm still logged in, and it'll break. But it doesn't just break - it pops up three different error dialogs in a row, just in case I might have not understood that it's broken.

This reminds me of Office Space:

Peter Gibbons: And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell: I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons: Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell: Eight?
Peter Gibbons: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it.

• Warner Bros. has come up with some unique advertising for the movie Contagion: a living billboard that grows the name of the movie out of bacteria and mold.


• They've finally actually started selling .xxx domains. So in case you were waiting for that to happen to start your porn site, now's the time.


• Super Punch highlights the art of Julian Callos, which is pretty impressive.

• The Diablo III closed beta has begun. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!


• Loving this small sampling of the art of Chris Foss. I remember getting a book of spaceship art out of the library when I was a kid, copying the drawings and coming up with my own, and either Foss or somebody imitating him must have drawn that book, because this looks very familiar.


• Watch a deleted scene from Thor here. It's not all that exciting, I'm afraid - just a more detailed introduction of Sif and the Warriors Three - but still. Thor deleted scene! You know you have to watch it.

• I think I might have to take part in #ThePact. So if you see a picture of me eating a donut in my Twitter stream tomorrow, that's what that's about. (UPDATE: Here you go.)


• This unlimited movie pass, which allows you to see as many movies in the theater as you like for $50 a month, is a great concept, and I think I probably would have been all over it in my free-wheeling, movie-obsessed, bachelor days.


• Jesus Christ. There are actually six (6!) different versions of Frankenstein in development in Hollywood right now. Thanks a lot, Twilight.


• Also, they are still trying to get that He-Man movie made, apparently. I love He-Man and all, but I just don't see that turning out well.


• A collection of negative and positive quotes from critics about Transformers 3. You would have to pay me a very large sum of money to see this movie.


• I do enjoy a good Super Punch image roundup.


• A trailer and a gameplay video for a new Phineas and Ferb video game, subtitled Across the Second Dimension. There's a movie of the same title that'll be airing on the Disney channel soon. Exciting!


• If you hadn't heard yet, World of Warcraft is now free to play until level 20. Tempting! But even when I do get the time these days, I tend to avoid playing video games and work on making one, instead. So I think I'll still be staying away from WoW for the foreseeable future.


• I am intrigued by Google+! I'll just wait here for my invite. Doo dee doo dee doo... Anybody? (UPDATE: I'm on! Thanks, Amy!)


• I've always been a big fan of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, as well as Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War film adaptation, Apocalypse Now, so I'm kind of excited that there's going to be a sci-fi film adaptation called Into Darkness, even if the people involved aren't exactly top notch talent.

• This new trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is thrilling, but a little upsetting to me. I don't remember a scene in the book when Harry grabbed Voldemort and jumped over a cliff with him. They're not trying to turn this into some typical action movie finale, are they? Because that would be very, very wrong.

• Hey, it's Mumm-Ra the ever-living! What a guy! I always loved that subtitle, "the ever-living."


• The latest entry on Making Game of Thrones is about designing the throne room.


• Oh man, Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Cosmic Cube would be so awesome. Way better than Crystal Skull, surely.


• Paramount just greenlit a movie version of The Martian Chronicles. I'm not sure it'd be possible to make a good film adaptation of that book - it seems uniquely... bookish; delicate and lyrical and easily ruined - but I'd be excited to see someone try.


• Here's the first episode of the new web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy. But yeah, don't bother watching it unless you're really curious or a superfan. It's composed almost entirely of cliches. Also, if you're going to shoot a person with a gun, why would you move really close to that person first? You've got a gun! It hits people from far away! Sigh.


• Here's a cool thing: a World of Warcraft player hit the level cap without ever killing anything, and completing only one quest. The person apparently leveled up almost entirely via exploring and discovering.


• AT-AT for America seems like a worthy cause. Let's do this, people!


• The art of banana carving.


• I posted this to Twitter a while back, but it's worth another link: George R.R. Martin's top 10 fantasy films. A lot of great picks here. I'm especially excited about the inclusion of Ladyhawke, a little film from the '80s that my brother and I seriously adored when we were younger.

• Oh sweet lord. Taco Bell is testing taco shells made from nacho cheese Doritos. Is this disgusting or deeply desirable? I can't seem to decide. All I know is, I'd definitely eat one. (Via)

Since I've got Twitter buttons all over, I thought it only fair I stick Facebook buttons all over, too. So I've added the Facebook "Like" button to all individual blog entries, as well as to They're Cops. I've also updated the blog's main page so you can Like or Tweet individual entries directly from there, or Like or Tweet the main page itself. And besides all that, I also made a handful of other little tweaks and improvements I won't bother describing in detail. Huzzah!

Mike V. was good enough to do extensive testing of the Twitter feature I added to my random cop movie premise generator, and pointed out some flaws. Well, I've finally gotten around to addressing them! All tweets generated by the app will now be automatically cut down to 140 characters or fewer (which only makes sense), and, even better, the link provided in the tweet will now take you to a version of the "They're Cops" page with the field at the bottom pre-populated with the particular "They're Cops" phrase that you found so amusing. So no one will have to guess at what it was that you found so funny. Yay!

Interestingly enough (well, interesting if you are technically inclined at all - non-developer nerds may want to step away now), in order to make this work I actually had to change the URLs on my website. I'd been using a vertical pipe in various URLs as a divider, but it turns out the Twitter API really hates vertical pipes. It was accepting the encoded version of the character the first time through, but then for some reason it was double-encoding it the next time through and posting an unusable URL. I probably could have kept banging my head against it until I got it to work, but instead I decided to take the easier way out and just replaced vertical pipes with commas in my URLs. The old vertical pipe-using URLs will redirect to the new comma-using URLs, in what I hope is a seamless change.

• One of the more inventive and amusing year-end lists I've seen: the Onion A.V. Club takes a look back at the year in band names.


• Syfy made the fascinating and rather depressing decision to just dump out the five remaining episodes of Caprica all at once last night and be done with it. The Onion A.V. Club reviews them here so you don't even have to watch them!


• Interestingly, despite claims that the internet would kill it, TV was apparently still going strong in 2010, with more Americans watching it than ever.


• A series of Street Fighter/Tron mashups. Nice!


• Dude built his own lightsaber, modeled after Luke's own homemade Jedi weapon from Return of the Jedi. Impressive. Most impressive.


• Pretty amusing Star Trek educational film on the subject of dealing with anger.


• A look at what's coming to BBC One in 2011. An especially tease-y teaser for an American like me, but still, we're bound to see some of this stuff over here eventually.
