• Here's a trailer for a movie called Rubber, which is about a sentient tire that kills people. I couldn't quite fit this one into my Philly Film Fest schedule; I'm regretting that now.


• Thor versus Jaws! Awesome.


• Can't say I'm too thrilled by this first image from the movie version of X-Men: First Class. But I will withhold judgment for now. (Angel's a woman now? With the what?)

• A Katamari Damacy-inspired episode of Laugh-Out-Loud Cats.


• The crew of the Enterprise tests experimental acid drive technology.

• George Lucas told Seth Rogen he sincerely believes the world is going to end in 2012. Rogen naturally concluded Lucas must have a spaceship ready to take him off Earth when the time comes.


• Here's an interesting list: the 5 best and the 5 worst Sundance purchases. In this context, "best" and "worst" are referring to the sale price compared to the eventual box office take. The fact that Son of Rambow is on the "worst" list makes me sad. I really liked that movie!


• Entertainment Tonight got some revealing footage from the set of Sherlock Holmes 2, and also interviewed the film's stars. Be warned: the video starts automatically as soon as you get to the page.


• Here's a collection of some great postwar West German sci-fi magazine covers.


• You probably already heard about the awful flooding they've been dealing with in Australia, but did you hear they also have to worry about sharks swimming in the streets?!? Among other sightings, a couple bull sharks were spotted going by a McDonalds. That's messed up. (Via)


• Scandal! (Also, big Harry Potter spoiler alert.) They changed Snape's death scene in Deathly Hallows Part 2! But it's cool, don't freak out. They just changed the setting. And they got Jo's blessing. So it's all good. Whew.

• io9 made some pretty good picks for the best science fiction and fantasy comics of 2010.


• One of the more inventive and amusing year-end lists I've seen: the Onion A.V. Club takes a look back at the year in band names.


• Syfy made the fascinating and rather depressing decision to just dump out the five remaining episodes of Caprica all at once last night and be done with it. The Onion A.V. Club reviews them here so you don't even have to watch them!


• Interestingly, despite claims that the internet would kill it, TV was apparently still going strong in 2010, with more Americans watching it than ever.


• A series of Street Fighter/Tron mashups. Nice!


• Dude built his own lightsaber, modeled after Luke's own homemade Jedi weapon from Return of the Jedi. Impressive. Most impressive.


• Pretty amusing Star Trek educational film on the subject of dealing with anger.


• A look at what's coming to BBC One in 2011. An especially tease-y teaser for an American like me, but still, we're bound to see some of this stuff over here eventually.

• President Obama will be on Mythbusters tonight. GeekDad lowers expectations about the episode, but says it's still a good one.


• A set of photos of action figures of Doctor Who villains hanging out in various real-world locations. (Via)


• A kick-ass music video for one of the best tracks on the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, "Derezzed." It features cyber-jousting! (In case you missed it, I named the Tron: Legacy soundtrack one of the top ten albums of 2010.)


• NASA's much-hyped arsenic life form announcement may have been a bunch of hooey. Disappointing!


• Somehow I only just realized this, but A.V. Club is doing a holiday version of Undercover. That means they're bringing ten artists into their weird little round room to cover ten holiday songs. Example: here's Kate Nash and her band doing a rather lovely cover of "Merry X-Mas Everybody."


• My friends, here it is, the pinnacle of our achievements as a species: the trailer for Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus. This film features Robert Picardo and Jaleel "Urkel" White. Astounding.


• Syfy must have liked the pilot for Alphas, that show about ordinary people who gain superpowers, because the network just ordered 11 episodes.


• December means lots of end of year best of lists. Here's A.V. Club's picks for the best music of 2010.


• Witness the ridiculousness that is a 149-hit combo in Super Street Fighter IV.


• Blah Blah Blah: The Video. A celebration of blah blah blah in movies and television.

Next, some amazing casting news for The Hobbit: Cate Blanchett is returning as Galadriel, and Sylvester "Seventh Doctor" McCoy will play Radagast the Brown. Of course, the fact that Galadriel and Radagast are showing up means we're going to get to see the meeting of the White Council that happens "off-screen" in the book, during one of the various times that Gandalf splits from the company to do his own thing. I have to say, I am VERY EXCITED about this!! Plus, the Doctor is going to be Radagast! Awesome.

• Hayao Miyazaki says if Studio Ghibli's upcoming film, Arietty the Borrower, doesn't do well at the box office, the studio may have to be shut down. I can't tell you how sad that makes me. Especially since Miyazaki says if they do have some box office successes, he'd make a sequel to Porco Rosso set during the Spanish Civil War, and I need to see that movie. Everybody go see Arietty the Borrower when it comes out, for God's sake!!! (Via Camden)


• Speaking of Miyazaki, you can watch his Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind online for free. And you should! I also highly recommend the manga. (Via)


• Yeah, I gotta admit, this new Cee-Lo track that's going around is pretty fantastic. FYI, the lyrics are NSFW, and since the video linked here is just the lyrics printed on the screen, it's pretty much NSFW all the way around. (Via Amy)

• Alternate universe movie posters. As in, movies from alternate universes, not movies set in alternate universes. I so wish I could see The Gunslinger starring Clint Eastwood, Ricky Shroder, and Jack Nicholson. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio as Kid Kthulu? Bruce Lee as Neo? Brilliant.


• Sufjan Stevens put out a new EP that you can download for $5, or stream for free. I'm listening now! Can't say I'm all that impressed so far, but I'm still making my way through the first track, which is almost 12 minutes long. Good old Sufjan. (Via)


• Paramount is giving a live-action Ninja Turtles movie another go for some reason. They didn't so much like the first draft of the screenplay, however, so they're getting another draft from the guys who did second draft work on Iron Man.


• An amusing Lord of the Rings-themed sketch.


• Everybody knows what a No. 2 pencil looks like, but what about all the other No. pencils? Here's a handy graphic.


• Pretty cool ad for Metroid: Other M. Although, considering that I can't find the time or the energy to play the Metroid games I already own, I probably won't be getting this one.


• Rumor has it that Shia LaBeouf says a fifth Indiana Jones film is already being written, and that the concept for it sounds "crazy" and "really cool" to him. Uh huh. Don't count your fridges before they're nuked!


• Bryan Singer revealed some details about the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie. It'll be set in the '60s, so the mutants' struggle can be easily compared with the civil rights movement; the costumes will be comic bookish; the Hellfire Club will be the villains, with Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw (!!!); other characters featured: Emma Smith, Azazel, Moira McTaggert, Beast, Darwin, Raven Darkholme, Banshee, Havok, Mystique, Charles Xavier, and a female version of Angel. Say what? Well... okay then.


• An early review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. The reviewer is generally positive, and one of his only problems with the movie is a complaint he had with the book, as well, and seeing as how I had almost no complaints with the book, I'm okay with that.

• Check out a new, full-length trailer for Dreamworks' upcoming computer-animated superhero action comedy, Megamind. Looks like it could be fun.


• It's Mickey Eye! Aaaaahhh!!


• Sci Fi Wire has helpfully compiled trailers and concept art for 9 upcoming sci-fi TV series. Some of this stuff I've seen (and posted here) before, but some of it's new to me. Persons Unknown looks like some weird combination of Cube, Prisoner, and a reality show; not particularly original, but intriguing. Undercovers is just Mr. & Mrs. Smith: The Series - ugh. The Event I'm vaguely interested in, even if it looks a lot like an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of shows like Lost and FlashForward.


• Wow - Joystiq comes right out and calls Super Mario Galaxy 2 the best Mario game ever. That's going pretty far! Now I might have to get it.


• Play Street Fighter IV with a guitar!

• A bootleg video of the trailer for that mystery project J.J. Abrams is working on with Steven Spielberg. Watch quick before the video is taken down! The trailer is apparently screening in front of Iron Man 2, and the movie is called Super 8. Looks like it has to do with some kind of dangerous creature escaping from Area 51. Which frankly bores me. I'm tired of Area 51 as a subject; it's so overused. Still, the trailer's kind of cool. We'll see.


• Is this the face of the new Godzilla???


• At the very end of this interview (the rest of which is interesting, too, btw), director Rian Johnson reveals some details about his next film, Looper.


• The X-Men: First Class screenwriters talk about the movie.


• The first image from the new Futurama series. It doesn't look good for our heroes! But then, it rarely does.


• Buttersafe is a web comic that hasn't been very good lately, but yesterday's entry entertained me.


• Amusing Star Wars-themed birth announcement video. The metaphors don't hold up all that well, but that's okay - it's still funny.


• They really are going to make a Planet of the Apes prequel film. Here's the synopsis: "Rise of the Apes is an origins story set in present-day San Francisco. The film is a reality-based cautionary tale, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. WETA will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors." I don't know about the CG apes, but if anybody can do it, WETA can.


• Impressive fan-made Street Fighter short film.


• Dude beat the original Super Mario Bros. using a DDR pad. That's insane.
