I know what you mean, but I was okay with that. I think the point was that Sosuke's choice was a foregone conclusion, and it was always going to be simple for him, because that's just the way he felt, and really we already knew that from everything that had come before. His actions up to that point had already made the choice, so the actual making of the choice was just a formality.
But yeah, one does get the feeling sometimes that Miyazaki isn't very interested in endings. The ending of Howl's Moving Castle is so abrupt it's ridiculous. All the conflicts are suddenly resolved and the credits pop up almost before the last scene is over.
