Bargain

When up the devil crawls from pits of hell
And stands he 'fore the mage that called him there,
Old Faustus seeks small pay for what he sells.

A trifling bit of necromance, the spell.
He begs the maths whereby to draft a stair
When up the devil crawls from pits of hell.

"It's just a bridge I want to build, a well
To climb into where time is light as air."
Old Faustus seeks small pay for what he sells.

A telekinematograph, a smell
That tastes of dark. For those he'll pay the fare
When up the devil crawls from pits of hell.

For just a peal upon the soundless bell,
For just a ride upon the maneless mare.
Old Faustus seeks small pay for what he sells.

He only wants a bloody villanelle.
To speak the words no human heart could bear.
When up the devil crawls from pits of hell
Old Faustus seeks small pay for what he sells.
