• HBO has picked up a pitch for a new TV show by Michael Chabon called Hobgoblin, which is about "a motley group of conmen and magicians who use their skills at deception to battle Hitler and his forces during WWII." That sounds incredibly awesome. Here's hoping it actually ends up on TV some day.


• Blastr dug up some old stories that reveal how pivotal George Lucas' ex-wife was in shaping the plot of Star Wars and even of Raiders of the Lost Ark. This doesn't totally explain why his more recent stuff has sucked so much... but it kind of does.

Poppy and I watched the original How to Train Your Dragon a little while ago, and although it was very predictable, it was also entertaining and surprisingly moving.


• Heh. This Wicked Witch of the East doorstop is pretty clever.


• Watch a creepy trailer for a movie called Frankenstein's Army, which is set near the end of WWII, and features Hitler using Victor Frankenstein's notes to replenish his dwindling troops in just the way you might expect.


• Speaking of trailers, Cinematical has the trailers for Thor and Captain America running back to back here. The Cap trailer is looking good! I'm excited.

• The other day I mentioned that I strongly suspected Caprica was not coming back for the second half of its first season (who started this stupid tradition of splitting up seasons into halves, anyway?), but happily I was wrong. In fact, it's coming back early, on October 5th at 10PM. Follow the link for a preview. Looks like we're going back to Grand Theft Auto: Caprica City, and now there are droogs there! (UPDATE: I was a little confused here. Although the second half of the first season is airing early, Syfy has still not announced a decision on the second season, and apparently may not do so until November. So Caprica still might be dead in the water.)


• The Onion A.V. Club reviews the pilot episode of the new Nikita. They say there's a lot of exposition, which I hate, but other than that it sounds like it might be okay.


• Hey, there's a website where you can order sacks of just cereal marshmallows! Finally you can have your marshmallow fix without all those annoying oat bits getting in the way! (To be honest, the thought of eating straight cereal marshmallows without some plain oats to cut the sweetness is disgusting to me, but I still find this fascinating.) (Via)


• Blastr has a fun list of 10 of the best sci-fi TV episodes ever aired. Some pretty good selections here, especially "Hush," "City on the Edge of Forever," and "33," all probably my favorite episodes of the respective series. In fact, "33" hooked me on Battlestar Galactica right away and for good. It's probably the best first episode of a series ever. I might have picked different episodes of The Outer Limits ("Keeper of the Purple Twilight?" "The Children of Spider County?"), Firefly (what about "Jaynestown," man?), and Star Trek: The Next Generation (the one with the flute!), but the ones they chose are mighty good. I think "Home" is the only episode of The X-Files I've never seen, which really pisses me off, because everybody says it's so good. I really should track it down one of these days. As for "The Eye of the Beholder"... I don't know, I've just never been a Twilight Zone guy. My reaction to that episode was pretty much just, "Ah. Yes. I see what you did there."

• The Tron hoodies from Threadless are back in stock! Now, who wants to lend me the money to buy one?


• Martin Scorsese's 15 favorite gangster movies. I'm sad to say I've only seen a handful of these, but I definitely agree with him on White Heat, Point Blank, and Night and the City. (Via)


• An update on Terrence Malick's latest, Tree of Life. Sounds like it might be done by next year, if we're lucky.


• Doctor Strange could be an animated film - made by Pixar?! YES. DO THIS.

• To paraphrase Cinematical's description, Passion Play is a movie about a down-on-his-luck trumpet player (Mickey Rourke) who seeks redemption from an angel (Megan Fox) who's being paraded around like a circus freak by a local gangster named Happy Shannon (Bill Murray). Woah. Interesting story and an interesting cast. Click through to top it off with an interesting clip.

• Neil Gaiman's Sandman might become a TV show that might be produced by the Supernatural guy. Hmm. I wasn't very impressed by what I saw of an early episode of Supernatural, but I've heard that it got a lot better. This could be good news.


• Came across this news on Twitter yesterday: Ron Moore's next television project is "an adult Harry Potter set in a world ruled not by science but by magic." As long as he doesn't ruin the ending the way he did with Battlestar Galactica, this could be very cool. (Also, I assume this means Caprica is dead in the water, which is sad.)


• "The big-screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona's Marvel comic Runaways will begin filming next spring in Los Angeles." Yay!


• The poster for the next season of Fringe, with some (maybe all?) of the Easter Eggs pointed out. Man, I'm still upset about Olivia being trapped in the other universe. They better get her out soon!


• Two items from a Cinematical news roundup that I found interesting: hilarious Bob Ross/300 mashup image, and "Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson are expected to star in the Diablo Cody-adapted zom-rom-com Breathers: A Zombie's Lament."

UPDATE 1:

• I wasn't going to mention this, because it's kind of old news, but just in case you haven't discovered it yet, behold the genius and awesomeness of Axe Cop. It's a sci-fi/fantasy/action web comic written by a 5-year-old and drawn by his 29-year-old brother. It is pure, wild, unfettered imagination - insane, hilarious, and fantastic. There are many, many episodes already, so it's taking me a while to catch up, but somehow it just keeps getting better with every episode I read. Check it out.

UPDATE 2:

• The guy who played the French master thief in the Ocean's movies is playing a real master thief in this movie. Looks good. (I don't remember where I got the link.)

• io9 interviews M. Night Shyamalan about The Last Airbender. He admits balancing the humor with the edginess was hard. He says his kids forced him to put Momo in the movie, but that he also had no choice but to cut a lot of other things, including the cabbage salesman (sadness!). He's determined to do three movies. It sounds like in one of those later films he might actually reveal what happens to Zuko's mom, which was one of the few loose ends left untied in the series. He also talks about Miyazaki being a huge influence, which is encouraging. I remain cautiously optimistic about these movies.

• A milk jug that knows when the milk has gone bad.


• Stephen Dorff has joined the cast of War of the Gods as Stavros, "a master thief who joins Theseus on his quest to help free Greece from the dark threat of the Titans."


• You've gotta love the fake company websites they make for big movies these days. Check out the site for Stark Expo 2010 (for Iron Man 2, via), and the site for Encom International (for Tron Legacy).


• The first trailer for Metroid: Other M focused on the story and the melodrama, and it sucked; this new trailer focuses on the action and the gameplay and it's much, much better. In fact, this game looks awesome.


• I love this Disney/Magritte mashup T-shirt.


• Lots of impressive work from the Society of Illustrators 2010 Student Scholarship competition.


• A fan made a brilliant, thrilling, action-packed trailer for the original Tron.


• Speaking of fan-made trailers, here's one for an imaginary Battlestar Galactica spin-off called The Twelve Colonies, set during the first big war with the Cylons.

• I was just talking yesterday about how busy Michel Gondry is, but apparently he's even busier than I thought; he's also working on some kind of crazy thing with Bjork: "We have a very ambitious project, a sort of scientific musical. (It's a movie), but maybe more for museums. Like a 40 minute IMAX project in 3D." (Via)

• Syfy is considering doing another Battlestar Galactica spin-off show. Also, they've got two superhero-related shows in the works. He joins up with a bunch of folks with similarly questionable powers to make a super team. The other show is called Alphas, and also involves a super team, but that's about all that's known so far.


• A few more details on that prequel of The Thing.


• Looks like Jason Segel's Muppet movie is moving forward, and he'll be starring in it.


• Fun with Alien! Some great cosplay, and cool vintage toy packaging (it's hard to believe they made Alien toys and marketed them to kids). (Via)

Just so you know, SPOILER ALERT!

We open with three people looking in on a hellish scene of sex and death and debauchery, as if they're angels, or beings from the future.

Ken: "It's not their fault, you know. They just... they don't know what they're doing."
Um... that's a very Jesus-like thing to say.

Zoe: "Go frak yourself."
Yep, we're back in the BG universe all right!

The technology is cool. She logs into the holoband by bringing up a menu on a piece of paper.

Woah! Religious terrorist suicide bombing!

The friendship between the two bereft men feels... odd. Kind of forced.

Another BG detail appears: the sport of pyramid.

Wow. The bloody Zoe in the holoband. That's creepy.

Hey, it's an old school Cylon Centurion! Not exactly up to snuff yet, though.

I kind of love the Greystone's butler robot.

Lacy: "Back there are the group sex and drug rooms. Keep going past that and you'll find the really gross stuff."
Okay then.

So... virtual Zoe is an amalgamation of all the information about Zoe that exists in computers all over the world. That's... vaguely clever. But also kind of lame. How could it be so complete and so real based entirely on stuff like that?

The Taurons are like the Jewish mob, then?

It's kind of sick watching Greystone have a tearful reunion with his virtual daughter and realize that he's just going to steal this technology for his Cylon war machines.

The cop investigating the bombing presents an interesting, extremely negative interpretation of monotheism.

Greystone is one twisted son of a bitch.

Dude, the Defense Minister is the Cigarette-Smoking Man from The X-Files!!

They are not effectively conveying for me the attraction of monotheism to a young girl. But maybe that's on me.

Lacy's spilling her guts! Not sure yet if she decided to do it to exactly the right or exactly the wrong person...

Joseph meeting his daughter's avatar is an absolutely horrific, wrenching sequence. It's extremely powerful. "Daddy, my heart isn't beating. Why isn't my heart beating?" Argh!

Greystone is putting his daughter's mind into the ugly, clumsy Cylon warrior body. What a horrible idea!

In his attempts to bring his daughter back, Greystone has lost her forever. A slightly obvious moral parable, but pretty well done all the same. I also like that Joseph was sorely tempted by this idea, but that he turned away in the end.

Joseph reveals his true Tauron name to his son: Adama. Wow. Very cool connection.

The Cylon is officially born - and Zoe is still inside it.

What a horrific origin story! This is a powerful movie that really stands on its own as a Battlestar Galactica prequel. I'm curious to see where a TV series could really go with all this. I'm definitely willing to give it a shot.

• io9 auditions various superheroes for the position of Santa.


• I would never play it, because it would probably scare the crap out of me, but the trailer for the upcoming Aliens Vs. Predator video game is pretty awesome.


• A superhero comedy called Super is on the way starring Rainn Wilson as the main character, Ellen Page as his wannabe sidekick, Kevin Bacon as his nemesis, and Liv Tyler as, I think, his wife.


• Bryan Singer's baffling no-relation-to-the-recent-TV-series Battlestar Galactica movie is apparently still going to happen; they're currently looking for a writer.


• I've never heard of the Mortal Engines novels, but apparently they're set in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world, and Peter Jackson is working on turning them into movies. Neat.


• Bryce Dallas Howard will play a role in Clint Eastwood's upcoming (possibly supernatural) thriller Hereafter.


• Three clips from Daybreakers. Still intriguing.


• The Russians are thinking about sending a robot and a monkey to Mars, instead of a human.


• Tarantino says his next movie will be smaller, less epic, and in a different genre entirely from Inglourious Basterds.
