"Also, I assume this means Caprica is dead in the water, which is sad."

No, not necessarily. Ron Moore was only the show-runner for Caprica for the first few episodes, and handed over day-to-day control to Jane Espenson (who herself dropped out of the position in order to write more, so they brought in another guy whose name escapes me). I think when Caprica was in development, RDM was still hoping to get Virtuality off the ground, so he never intended to be in charge in a really hands-on fashion.

Yeah. The weird thing is that they extended the cast contracts to November (which effectively postpones the decision re: a second season until then), but the second half of the season won't air until next January. So it's not really clear what they're waiting for, since by the time their own self-imposed deadline arrives they won't have any new ratings information to base their decision off of.

Now, I'm not super-optimistic about a second season (and to be honest, I felt like the show fell off after episode five or so), but certainly SyFy clearly _wants_ to pick up the series but hasn't decided whether or not it's a good idea.

(Hopefully without context this will still be relatively spoiler-free for people.)

Ok, remember, though... Sharon Valerii mentioned "growing up back home" more than once before she realized she was a toaster. I believe I remember her even saying something about how she couldn't be a Cylon because she remembered her parents.

If they're going to have sleeper agents, they're almost CERTAINLY going to have to have implanted memories. Otherwise, it'd be pretty much a dead give-away.

There's also a third, related explanation -- what if most people and Cylons don't realize it, but Hera was not the first of "her kind?" Maybe there's another who could be the "shape of things to come." Note, we never see you-know-who's father in this episode. And the mother tells you know who that he/she is "special" more than once. And a certain Cylon character is also very nearly nurturing to you-know-who.

Either of these theories would explain a lot that I can't possibly go into without actual spoilers. But it all makes sense.

Can't agree with you about the ending of Galactica. The way you would have liked to see it play out just seems kind of soap-operaish to me, and also completely out of character for Lee. Also, had it ended with Starbuck shooting Caine, and then everyone having to brood and feel guilty and question their humanity and all that, it would have been, well... predictable.

Rather than actually grab a gun and point it at Adama, risking her own life for no apparent purpose, why not just tell Adama ahead of time that a plot exists to kill him and his son? And it's not like declaring 'I have no secret programming' is all that convincing, because I'm sure the other Sharon didn't think that she had any secret programming either, assuming that this Sharon isn't lying through her teeth anyway.

Obviously Zarek and his boy would just deny deny deny, and probably Sharon would be killed for suggesting such a thing. Only by acting, thereby tricking what'shisname into acting, and then saving their keesters, could she possibly convince them of anything. The act of saving their lives from treachery is a very good move politically, and maybe it doesn't lend absolute creedence to all of her claims, but it definitely gives her more credibility.

kheara: I wasn't blaming them on you, specifically. But even assuming that they wouldn't believe her, she could have at least told Starbuck or Helo, and one of them could take action when Meyer tried to pull something.

The bottom line is, had a Cylon grabbed for a gun near Adama, I would have shot to kill without a second thought, and Sharon has to take that into account. And for her, since she will give all her memories to a possibly less friendly model upon death, risking her life means exposing the resistance cel on Caprica to danger as well.
I must agree with Feanor. If Sharon had warned Adama, Zarek's boy would have denied it and Roslin would still have a viper (so to speak) at her bosom. By drawing him out, Sharon might not have nailed Zarek, but she did eliminate one of his goons, which is one fewer snake for Roslin to deal with. Sure, she knows that Zarek is EXACTLY the kind to order an assasination, but removing one of his cat's paws is in my opinion still valuable.

Hell...at this point, the humans are doing more to screw themselves than the Cylons could, short of a full-scale attack. I agree with ST that Roslin played her hand better than Adama played his, and that's had an effect. Already she has motivated two officers (Starbuck and Apollo) to mutiny, and her own jailer thinks she's a prophet. At some point, the Council of Twelve is going to ask, "Um...why is the president in the Galactica brig?" and Tigh is going to have to answer them with more than just a loaded gun.

Consider this: The Galactica was separated from the fleet for a while because of Gaeda's error in calculating the emergency jump, and this separation came not long after Colonial One was assaulted. What can Tom Zarek do with that coincidence?

Towards the end, I was bouncing back btw BSG and DS9 (it was the Tribble episode, I had no choice), so I may have missed something; but I can't imagine that Baltar is set up for something as simple as killing Adama. If that's all the baby dreams mean, I'd be very disappointed.

Partially I think this because of what I've saying to Neil since the season closer for last year: Adama seriously misread the politics of the situation, the President outplayed him, and eventually civilian control is going to have to reassert itself if the entire fleet isn't going to split apart. This is esp. true now that Tigh is in charge instead of Adama. If the Cylons are at all clever and patient, they can keep Baltar in their back pocket until he becomes useful. If the President dies (she does have cancer, right?), he may well become REALLY useful.

Besides, I feel like acts of terror need a certain novelty: one assassination attempt is shocking, two and it becomes part of accepted Cylon strategy. You have to keep the humans on their toes by attacking in a variety of different ways.

Also, I think it would be lame.

Not to be too annoying, but the terrorist had a point in saying the education chick wasn't democratically elected. I think that was Apollo's point, which he made in a semantically confusing way: we (and presumably the galaticians) don't live in a democracy, we live in a republic. The education chick's accension would not work in a democracy; it works perfectly in a republic, with it's added bureaucracy. Though I sometimes take issue about not living in a democracy, I think incidents such as the rioting over water demonstrate why democracy is not always feasible or even a good idea.

Part of it was admittedly subjective, and hostage situations are among my least favorite of movie/TV scenarios, along with courtroom scenes and I'm-having-a-dream. I felt that the A-story didn't really advance the plot, although the Baltar plutonium request was certainly significant. Also, the current president was indeed selected through the democratic process, albeit not in the way you'd expect. Not everything in a democracy works according to a direct popular vote, Mr. Terrorist, as you'd know if you were a *real* intellectual. Bah.

I actually think that it makes a huge difference. It is completely unrealistic to expect that twelve planets can be governed by direct democracy, so they're not. To my mind that is what the real issue was to the terrorist guy, that the system is inherently unfair because not everything is decided by the people, including the ruler. The law of succession is fine, but the education lady was not elected to her position, rather she was appointed and approved, which is wholly different. The point is more than semantic; it really demonstrates the problems inherent in any self-governing nation that attempts to balance the will (the right) of the people and the practicality of ensuring that everyone has water. Few people care about their municipal government or who runs it, but will scream bloody murder if their trash is not picked up on time. I can't think of a place, right down to a rotary club, where direct democracy is feasible, but there has to be a distinction between republicanism and democracy for the actions and machinations of a government (and the rule of succession) to make sense.
