This post perplexes me. Granted, Apple engineered the iPod so they wouldn't be vehicles for blatant file sharing (so no, you can't simply copy music off the iPod), but if you don't have a computer that has at least the storage capacity of the iPod itself, how do you get the music on there in the first place? I thought the devices were married to a single instance of iTunes, which then had to manage what's on that device. Your post implies otherwise. Were you able to sync your iPod with multiple iTunes libraries? Only then does your idea of backing up the iPod makes sense, because in a normal usage scenario, an iPod itself is a backup of the synced music/videos on your host computer.

No, thankfully the iPod is not married to a single instance of iTunes. If that were the case, the thing would be pretty much unusable as far as I'm concerned. I have iTunes on three different computers and copy music onto the iPod from all of them. Often after I've copied the music onto the iPod, I'll delete it from the computer.

You can't trust the iPod to last forever, so I definitely want to back it up often so all that music is still in one place somewhere and can be easily copied back off onto that iPod, or a new iPod. I back up the iPod onto an external hard drive.
