Hmmm, good point. I guess I was just kind of ignoring that and pretending the details in the book were occurring, but we just weren't seeing them. But yes, I was definitely disappointed that they didn't capture the gentleness he showed in their first night together, or the real joy she took in the horse he gave her, or all the other things he tried to do to please her. They really do seem to have boiled him down to a savage brute. Maybe they'll develop him further in later episodes? I hope?

So, the Dany/Drogo changes are no bothering you? Frankly, it's the one thing that's pissing me off, but in this ep, it pissed me off hard. Drogo has 0 redeeming features in this portrayal. He's every bit the bastard the books hint at and then prove not true. He murders and kills, then comes back to rape and brutalize Dany every night. And then she turns to her handmaids and asks how she can "please him?" Huh? There's no motivation for it. No woman in the world would do this. She should want to stick a knife in his neck, or run really really far, not "please him."

Ron Moore was only the show-runner for Caprica for the first few episodes, and handed over day-to-day control to Jane Espenson (who herself dropped out of the position in order to write more, so they brought in another guy whose name escapes me).
Yeah. The weird thing is that they extended the cast contracts to November (which effectively postpones the decision re: a second season until then), but the second half of the season won't air until next January. So it's not really clear what they're waiting for, since by the time their own self-imposed deadline arrives they won't have any new ratings information to base their decision off of.

Now, I'm not super-optimistic about a second season (and to be honest, I felt like the show fell off after episode five or so), but certainly SyFy clearly _wants_ to pick up the series but hasn't decided whether or not it's a good idea.

@Angie89: It's quite possible I've forgotten some things. But in "The Man From the Other Side," wasn't Brandon just talking about an alternate universe as if it were a theory, and not an actual thing that he'd already been sending objects to?

And okay, there's a difference between the way different people have crossed over, but why are there so many different ways to cross over, and how are they different? It seems like every time somebody does it, it's different. I don't think that's been very well explained.

@joe: Yeah, that's what bothered me. It's not like they haven't had time to build up to this. It's all they've been doing all season! But for some reason they never took the time in previous episodes to build up this stuff. If there'd been even one scene in a previous episode in the basement of Massive Dynamic where they showed lab techs waking up the other Cortexiphan subjects, I would have been more willing to swallow that whole subplot.

S. Tarzan

I wasn't really sure about this episode either. I rewatched the pilot last week and thought that it made a strong case for Caprica as a series that could have rich characters and interesting conflicts in play. But I don't think "Rebirth" really did that.

I think what the show probably needed to do was either have a strong through-line that can tie in the major characters (a la "33") or focus on a few of the characters (like the Adamas, or the Graystones) and really establish that dynamic for the audience (a la any number of Lost episodes). As it was, I felt like there were a lot of interesting parts to the episode, but I never really got a handle for what these different parts of the world were like.

(Graystone's a good example of that; it would be nice to have an episode that established the guy's worldview and where he's coming from, because you're right that he seems to have two sharply different sides to him, and it's not clear where the boundaries are there.)

The one aspect of the show that I'm really into right now is the Tauron mafia stuff; it's more familiar than the combination of grief and mad science or the heady AI stuff, and I thought that the scenes between little Bill Adama and his uncle really sold their relationship pretty well. I don't know about the child actor, but the potential pull between Joseph Adama and his brother with Bill in the middle is something that I'd like to see more of.

For the most part I agree with you, but I actually thought that the science surrounding the virus wasn't all that far-fetched. We already know that virii and parasites can change animal behaviour, sometimes to a creepy degree (like the one worm that causes its host to drown itself, see http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/09/0901_050901_wormparasite.html). We've already seen viruses that trigger paranoia in mammals, too. So if the virus causes paranoia, claustrophobia and somehow knows to expel itself when a human is around other uninfected humans (OK, that last part is the toughest to explain), it's not all that unreasonable.

Actually, the virus changing people's behavior was not the part that I found particularly implausible. It was more how quickly Walter was able to find a cure, using only a random guess and the contents of an office fridge. But regardless, yes, I agree, there's nothing in the episode that is far-fetched in the context of Fringe.

I was so impressed how along the way they kept bringing people back and referencing things that had happened before. The Fire-Island Players was the perfect capstone to that. :)

I talked to Neil right after I saw the end and said that I was so amazed a "kid's series" had dealt with such a 'big' issue at the end. He asked what I meant and I said the final question of the series was: "If you don't believe in killing, in violence — what do you do when it seems it's become necessary to kill/harm to save what you love?" He kind of blinked at that and said — "Yeah, that's kind of big."

I think they kind of skipped out on actually trying to ANSWER it, but hey — it's a kid's series. :)

I didn't think too much about Zuko's "missing" mother at the end. He had been told he had to give up all his connections to the world, including his love for Katara, in order to have complete control over his Avatar state, but he couldn't do that. In the end I thought he would have to confront that again, but he just got hit by a rock and he was all good. Re gift giving...I'll make it easy for you: I would like 30 Rock, season 2, on dvd. :)

Point 2: Television is magic! But for me, even crazier is airplane travel. As you know I fly a lot for work and every single time I'm hurtling through the sky in that big metal tube, I get sort of freaked out (in a good way) in utter amazement that it's even happening. Especially during takeoff...I just stare out the window, fascinated that the plane is leaving the Earth's surface.

Point 3: Also awful are those free credit report commercials...totally scammy. It's general common knowledge that everyone is entitled to one free credit report per year, but a lot of people don't know that the proper way to do it is to go to the websites of one of the three major credit reporting companies and follow the links from there. Those commmercials cash in on that and get people (usually people with not a lot of money knowledge in the first place) hooked into their paid services. Yuck.

Point 2:

I'm with Val: I think the way the season ended could also serve as a series ender if it has to. Not to say that I'm not really hoping for a second season (because I am!) but I think they gave us enough closure that we could project what might logically happen if needed.

I was also caught unawares that Dr. Saunders was actually Whiskey! Crazytown! And, didn't see it coming that Ballard chose to let Mellie/November go early; even when he was with "Mellie" he was too focused on Caroline to really enjoy "Mellie."

Hmm. I wonder how they'd recycle Victor? Perhaps as a handler? Or maybe DeWitt would want the lonelyhearts profile resurrected? And, are there other prisoners acting as Dolls? If so, they better send those dolls to the attic; Alpha's underlying craziness aggravated by the whole composite effect & some dolls (Victor, Sierra, Echo, & that other dude) needing "closure" for the remnants of their original selves should reinforce for the Dollhouse staff that the Ballard's notion of "soul" never really leaves completely. If they don't purge the potentially dangerous dolls, they're going to wind up with an army of Alphas.

Haven't figured out yet where she fits in.

Anyway, I'd bet that they wrote the season finale as if it were a series finale, just in case it didn't get picked up again. I bet they'll resolve all the immediate conflict & set the stage for a return to "normalcy" within the LA Dollhouse, which would serve equally well for a second season (new chaos! new drama!) or an end.

There was a lot of exposition, Dushku wasn't quite up to playing Adele's friend, and I thought the ending (at the house, with the will, not the last scene) was a little soft.

Also I think they should explore more the possibility of life after death at the Dollhouse. I didn't see it coming that Dominic was the mole, but it makes sense. I was also sad to see DeWitt get rid of Victor's profile for their engagements; dang, that woman must have ice water for veins! Like you, I didn't like that Echo's getting a new handler; something tells me that the new handler will be a Red Shirt, though. I keep hearing that people think the show sucks & that it's not doing well. I can't figure out why! I mean, the characters are fascinating... the plot twists are surprising but not whackadoo... they don't string us along like Lost, where you have to wait 300 years to find out what the twist or significance of something is...
I do think Echo's kickass personality implant was tampered with, but I have a crazy hunch that DeWitt's involved with that. I mean, why not just send the creepy handler to the attic or kill him? Why have the sleeper active take care of him? And like you've mentioned... why leave Ballard alive when it'd be so easy to kill him?

I think DeWitt's duplicitous.

Also, I'm still loving this show.

I was thinking about why DeWitt sent the creepy handler to be killed by the sleeper active, and I think it was just a case of killing two birds with one stone; she wanted it to look like the Russians were coming after Ballard (thus the way Hearn's finger prints came up as some random Russian guy when checked), so she needed a dead body in his apartment. Why not have that body be of somebody she wanted dead anyway?

But yeah, I still don't quite follow why they're keeping Ballard alive. Maybe it will make more sense in time.

I get the impression that Ballard's the only guy at the Bureau who would really put the effort necessary to find the Dollhouse. His higher-ups seemed to want just a token effort.

That drunken Irish lawyer guy's been on a lot of stuff recently; he was also leader of a group of bank robbers in an episode of Burn Notice, and a whole bunch of episodes of Leverage, and an episode of NCIS.

And I think that Echo's personality actually was tampered with like she says to Ballard. (Specifically, I think it's Topher's intern, the Asian lady with the line, "I live to serve lunch.") I read an interview with Joss Whedon recently, and while he didn't speak directly to this point, he did say that the premise would theoretically allow them to pull the rug out of the audience pretty much constantly, and that they wanted to keep that to a minimum to keep the audience from becoming frustrated and allow them to take a lot of things on face value.

True, Ballard was exceptionally focused. But it still seems to me that Dollhouse will have to waste resources keeping an eye on his replacement, however lazy and uninterested that person might be.

I also suspected Topher's intern of being the one who did the tampering, if tampering was done.

That's interesting about Joss' comments.
I thought the wife connecting with Sarah and letting her open the storage unit was a bit strange too, but after thinking about it, I think that the wife was struggling with the fact that the whole town (which ostensibly would be everyone she knows) is burying their heads in the sand, so can't trust any of them with what she fears. A stranger, who she thinks had a connection to her husband, might not pass judgement on her or her husband if anything was found. It's a stretch, but you do have to suspend reality with this show a lot.

I like how the space ship was reminiscent of the ships that worked the Skynet camps in the future. very surreal.

No problem! :)

If you're not totally fed up with Comcast, I think they have DNS problems often which effectively takes out the interweb. You could try using OpenDNS instead; even with Verizon I use OpenDNS.

Did you try Vonage before or some other third party VoIP? Trust me, you shouldn't notice any difference from a regular land line with Verizon VoIP. It should make a world of difference using a Tier 1 internet provider.

See you next weekend, I hope!

Huh. I might have to look into this OpenDNS thing. But the problems we're having with Comcast at the moment extend further than the DNS, I think, as they're affecting our cable TV signal, as well. Luckily, I found somebody else's unprotected wireless network nearby, and their internet is working fine, so.... :)

Yes, we did try Vonage. We were a little disappointed with the quality and reliability, and with the fact that it would just crap out when the power went out. But if Verizon isn't like that, it's all good.

Yes, we should definitely see you next weekend! Hooray!

I'm a little disappointed about the VoIP thing, as poppy and I had that for a while and didn't care for it. (And in fact, I have another new complaint about Comcast: for the past few days our internet has been down intermittently.) Hopefully Verizon will be more reliable.

Tim on "Your Opinions on FiOS Are Requested" by Fëanor

Tim

I've had FiOS for over two years now. It's great. I don't think I've ever had a connection problem, and the speed is outstanding for the price. I did just have a little billing kerfluffle for a few months recently because my contract expired a year ago and they finally got around to raising the rate (by $5), but that's all sorted now.

One thing I will say, the installation may be free, but that doesn't mean they're not getting something out of it. Laws were passed in the 90s which stated that the incumbent telcos were obligated to share their copper lines for DSL at reasonable prices to third parties in order to foster broadband competition. When Verizon installs the fiber loop to your house, they disconnect the copper. This cuts out third party competition because there are no laws compelling Verizon to share its fiber Ñ just its copper. DSL will no longer be an option down the road because once you've been wired for fiber, there's no going back.

As a result of the copper disconnection, if you have a land line, it's going to become a VoIP line. This has one important consequence: if your power goes out for an extended period, your phone line will eventually go dead, cutting you off from emergency services like 911. There is a battery backup that will be installed with the fiber drop, and I think it keeps the VoIP running for about 8 hours. After that, you're SOL until the power comes back on.

That being said, we really don't get much choice of broadband service here in the US, but FiOS really is a great service, and I highly recommend it over cable and DSL.

As for the TV service, I can't give you a first hand recommendation since I don't have it, but I hear very good things about it. One thing I will say, Verizon is considerably less bandwidth constrained than Comcast, so will have less trouble adding additional HD channels as time goes on. Plus, I've heard that the HD quality is better than what you get over cable since it doesn't need to be compressed as much.

If you do decide to go with FiOS, be aware that the installation generally takes about 4 hours, and you need to be home for the technician to do their work.

Good luck!

How does Comcast get away with having such crappy service?! How, I ask you?!

Our most recent go-round with them was me calling to see if I could get their cheaper Triple Play pricing since we have all the services of Triple Play but on an a-la-carte system (we signed up for each thing about a year apart). Dude said no, that was only for new customers - which seems like total crap, but whatever. I didn't want to lose our internet or cable or phone, so I just thanked him for his time & hung up.

About 2 weeks go by (around the time their billing cycle changed) and our internet goes out. Tony spends 2 hours getting it straightened out, where it turns out that someone had screwed up our account as if we hadn't been paying our bill (which flummoxed the lady, as she repeatedly told Tony "But I don't understand - your account clearly shows you've always paid your bill.").

About 4 days later, the phone goes out. We can make calls but not receive them. It was my turn to call, so I did. I got really lucky and got a smart dude right off the bat. He had me do all this troubleshooting, I had him check our account first (because of the other thing), and yet he couldn't figure it out. He asks if he could call back on my mobile after he had a chance to research so I wouldn't be on hold forever (!!). I say sure, so dude calls back about 30 minutes later.

Turns out some person/process at Comcast had set our phone to forward all our calls away from our house, but hadn't entered a forwarding number. Dude told me it was one of the dumbest things he'd ever seen, but there's no way it was a user error because users can't even access that particular functionality in the way it was broken.

I never want to change anything with them ever again.

Good lord!

It really is amazing. It seems like everybody who's ever had Comcast has at least one ridiculous story like this. I guess they get away with it because in most cases there really is no other choice - if you want cable, you have to get Comcast. So they have no real incentive to have good service, because they know you're going to remain their customer and keep paying them regardless of how poorly they treat you. But it's still really unacceptable. Don't we have laws against monopolies or something like that?
