I believe that one of the pleasures of the second volume which you did not mention is the heavy dose of stories featuring Big Red McLane...the lumberjack. Back in 1940 at the dawn of the comic book they eviently thought that stories about a lumberjack were a good idea!

You're right, I didn't talk enough about Big Red McLane! The lumberjack genre has been sadly neglected in modern comics. I was fascinated by how Red's story took an odd new turn in this book, with him gaining a girlfriend and starting in on a boxing career.

It was great. Ultraman would randomly annihilate people from his satellite with his heat vision. Owlman and Super Woman were conducting an affair behind Ultraman's back that he knew about but couldn't prove. I highly recommend picking up the various trades.
